Although it has been argued that under-threes should not have any screen time at
all, research has found that digital tech can offer “rich opportunities” for
young children’s development.
A two-year study, Toddlers, Tech and Talk, funded by the Economic and Social
Research Council and led by researchers from Manchester Metropolitan University
(MMU), working with Lancaster, Queen’s Belfast, Strathclyde and Swansea
universities, looked at children’s interactions with everything from Amazon
Alexa to Ring doorbells, in diverse communities across the UK, to find out how
tech was influencing 0- to three-year-olds’ early talk and literacy.

Meta’s global affairs chief points to ‘behavioural issue’ around child safety

Parents do not use parental controls on Facebook and Instagram, according to
Meta’s Nick Clegg, with adults failing to embrace the 50 child safety tools the
company has introduced in recent years.
Meta’s global affairs chief said there was a “behavioural issue” around using
the tools, after admitting they were being ignored by parents. Regulatory
pressure is building on tech companies to protect children from harmful content,
with the Australian government announcing plans this week to ban younger
teenagers from accessing social media.

Guidelines also stipulate teenagers should have no more than three hours of
screen time a day
Children under the age of two should not be exposed to any screens whatsoever
and teenagers should have no more than three hours of screen time a day,
according to guidelines announced by health authorities in Sweden.
Parents and guardians should think about how they use screens with their
children and tell them what they are doing on their phones when they use them in
their presence, the advice says.
